Anche chi non \u00e8 amante dei fumetti conosce Gotham City,<\/strong> la citt\u00e0 immaginaria dove vengono ambientate le avventure di Batman. I disegnatori della DC Comics tuttavia non sono partiti da zero: Gotham City \u00e8 la trasposizione in chiave fantastica di New York City<\/strong>. Sar\u00e0 per questo motivo che il type designer Frere-Jones<\/strong>, allora socio di Hoefler, quando disegna il carattere tipografico Gotham<\/strong> sceglie di chiamarlo come la citt\u00e0 dei fumetti. Come per Batman anche in questo caso New York \u00e8 fonte di grande ispirazione.
<\/p>

La nascita del carattere avviene nel 2000, su commissione della rivista GQ<\/strong>, che vuole un carattere lineare, dalla struttura geometrica. Un carattere \u201cmaschile, nuovo e fresco\u201d<\/strong> che dia autorevolezza e credibilit\u00e0 agli articoli pubblicati.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Per catturare l\u2019essenza della citt\u00e0, Tobias Frere Jones scatta migliaia di foto in giro per New York, concentrandosi in particolare sulle vecchie insegne della met\u00e0 del XX secolo<\/strong>. Il type designer vuole cogliere lo spirito razionalista <\/strong>di quegli anni, riscontrabile anche nell\u2019architettura e nell\u2019urbanistica.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

L\u2019ispirazione pi\u00f9 forte gli viene data dall\u2019insegna del Port Authority Bus Terminal<\/strong>, sulla Eighth Avenue, la cui semplicit\u00e0 viene cos\u00ec sintetizzata dallo stesso Frere-Jones: \u201cNon sono lettere che disegnerebbe un tipografo, ma un ingegnere. Il fatto che siano nate fuori dall\u2019ambiente della tipografia d\u00e0 loro un sapore molto distintivo\u201d.<\/p>

Il carattere che ne viene fuori incarna in pieno la filosofia minimalista<\/strong> da cui trae ispirazione. Nelle sue 44 varianti di peso, oggi diventate 66, non c\u2019\u00e8 spazio per elementi frivoli o senza senso. Il Gotham \u00e8 un carattere solido, concreto, funzionale, ma allo stesso tempo accessibile<\/strong>. La descrizione presente sul sito di Hoefler & Co<\/a> \u00e8 abbastanza chiara al riguardo: “Dalle lettere che lo hanno ispirato, il Gotham ha ereditato un tono onesto che \u00e8 assertivo ma mai imponente, amichevole ma mai folle, fiducioso ma mai in disparte.”<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Lo stesso Obama<\/strong>, 4 anni dopo la prima campagna, decide di servirsi ancora del Gotham, per le elezioni di medio termine del 2012<\/strong>. Questa volta per\u00f2 chiede di aggiungere delle grazie al \u201csuo\u201d carattere.
